An order for midday prayer at an easter vigil Opening sentencesOne: Our help is in the name of the Holy One All: Who made heaven and earth.
One: From the rising of the sun to its setting My name is great among the nations, Says the Creator of the cosmos. All: The name of JHWH be praised.
Daily Midday PsalmPsalm 19:1-61 The heavens herald your glory, O God, and the skies display your handiwork. 2 Day after day they tell their story, and night after night they reveal the depth of their understanding. 3 Without speech, without words, without even an audible voice, 4 their cry echoes through all the world, and their message reaches the ends of the earth. For in the heavens the sun has pitched a tent. 5 It comes forth with the grandeur of a wedding procession, with the eagerness of an athlete ready to race. 6 It rises at one end of the sky and travels to the other end, and nothing escapes its warmth. Scripture for an Easter VigilJob 14:1-141 One who is born of human parents has a short life full of troubles. 2 It blossoms like a flower and quickly withers; it flees like a shadow and disappears. 3 Why do you now bring your gaze upon it, and bring it into judgment with yourself? 4 Who can make the unclean clean? No one! 5 You created humankind with numbered days; our months are predetermined because you set the bounds on our time. 6 Take your eyes off me; give me some space, so that, like the day worker, we can complete our task. 7 Trees always have hope; once felled, there is the chance of a new sprout with tender shoots. 8 Even with the root rotting underground and a withered stump half alive, 9 yet it will bud at the scent of water, and put out branches like a new plant. 10 But people die and decompose; once dead, where are they? 11 As water evaporates from the sea, and rivers go dry during drought, 12 so humans lie down and never rise again. Until the heavens are no more, they won’t awake or be roused from their sleep. 13 If only you would hide me among the dead, and conceal me until your rage cools down-- then set a time to remember me again! 14 When people die, will they ever live again? All the days of my struggle I wait for my release.
Matthew 27:57-6657 When evening fell, a wealthy man from Arimathea named Joseph, who had become a disciple of Jesus, 58 came to request the body of Jesus; Pilate issued an order for its release. 59 Taking the body, Joseph wrapped it in fresh linen 60 and laid it in his own tomb, which had been hewn out of rock. Then Joseph rolled a huge stone across the entrance of the tomb and went away. 61 But Mary of Magdala and the other Mary remained sitting there, facing the tomb.
62 The next day—the one following the Day of Preparation—the chief priests and the Pharisees called at Pilate’s residence 63 and said, “We recall that, while he was still alive, the impostor made the claim, ‘After three days I will rise again.’ 64 Therefore, please issue an order to keep the tomb under surveillance until the third day. Otherwise, Jesus’ disciples might go and steal his body and tell the people, ‘Jesus has been raised from the dead!’ This final deception would be worse than the first.”
65 Pilate said to them, “You have a guard. Go and secure the tomb as best you can.” 66 So they went to seal the tomb and posted a guard.
